2. The personal data we collect
The personal data we collect depends on how you interact with us. It may include:
- Identity and contact information, such as your name, email address, telephone number, postal address, organisation and job title.
- Enquiry and correspondence information, including the information you provide when contacting us and our subsequent communications with you.

- Marketing preferences, including whether you have agreed to receive news and updates from us.
- Participation information, when you take part in fundraising, education, partnership, volunteering or other activities.
- Technical and usage information, such as your IP address, browser type, device information, referring website and how you use our website. Non-essential analytics information is collected only in accordance with your cookie choices.
We do not normally receive or store your full payment card details. Online donations and some purchases are processed by third-party payment or fundraising providers.
We may also receive personal data from third parties, such as fundraising platforms, payment providers, event partners or organisations running an activity with us, where they are permitted to share it with us.
3. How we use your personal data
UK data protection law requires us to have a lawful basis for using personal data. We may use your information as follows:
| How we use your information | Lawful basis |
|---|---|
| Responding to enquiries and communicating with you | Our legitimate interests in managing enquiries and relationships, or taking steps at your request before entering into an agreement |
| Administering donations, fundraising activities, Gift Aid, supporter benefits and related records | Performing an agreement with you, complying with a legal obligation, and our legitimate interests in administering and improving our fundraising |
| Managing partnerships, events, volunteering, education programmes and other activities | Performing an agreement with you, taking steps at your request, and our legitimate interests in delivering our charitable work |
| Sending email news and fundraising updates | Your consent, where consent is required. In limited circumstances, we may rely on legitimate interests where the law permits this |
| Maintaining suppression records so that we respect an opt-out | Our legal obligations and legitimate interests |
| Operating, securing and improving our website and services | Our legitimate interests in maintaining a secure and effective website |
| Measuring website use through non-essential analytics technologies | Your consent |
| Meeting legal, regulatory, safeguarding, accounting and governance requirements | Compliance with a legal obligation and, where relevant, our legitimate interests |
Where we rely on legitimate interests, we consider whether our use is necessary and proportionate and balance it against your rights and interests.
You can withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before it was withdrawn.
4. Marketing
If you have asked to receive news and updates, we may use your name, email address and preferences to send them to you. You can unsubscribe at any time by using the unsubscribe link in an email or by contacting us.
We may keep a minimal suppression record after you unsubscribe so that we can make sure we do not contact you again by mistake.
We do not sell your personal data to other organisations for marketing.
5. Donations and external services
Donation buttons on our website may take you to an external fundraising or payment service. Our general campaign donations are currently processed through GoFundMe. Moon Bear Champion payments are processed through DigiTickets on behalf of Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park.
When you follow an external link and submit information, that provider will process your personal data under its own privacy notice. It may also provide Space for the Wild with information needed to administer your donation or supporter benefit. We recommend reading the provider’s privacy information before submitting your details.
6. Cookies, analytics and embedded content
We use cookies and similar technologies to operate our website and, with your consent, to understand how it is used and to enable non-essential third-party content or services.
You can accept, reject or manage non-essential cookies through our cookie banner and can change your choices at any time. For details of the cookies and providers currently in use, please see our Cookie Policy.
Some pages may include content from other websites, such as video or social media services. These providers may collect information about you if you consent to the relevant cookies or interact with their content.
7. Who we share personal data with
Where necessary, we may share personal data with trusted organisations that help us operate and deliver our work, including:
- website, hosting, email and IT providers;
- mailing list and communications providers;
- fundraising, ticketing and payment providers;
- professional advisers, auditors and insurers;
- project, education, event and delivery partners;
- analytics and digital advertising providers, where you have consented to the relevant cookies; and
- regulators, law-enforcement bodies, courts or other authorities where disclosure is required by law.
These organisations may act as our processors, following our instructions, or as separate controllers responsible for their own use of your information.
We may also share information if this is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of Space for the Wild, our supporters, beneficiaries or others.
8. International transfers
Some of our service providers may process personal data outside the UK. Where this happens, we take steps required by UK data protection law to protect your information. These may include relying on UK adequacy regulations or using approved contractual safeguards, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
You can contact us if you would like more information about the safeguards used for a particular transfer.
9. How long we keep personal data
We keep personal data only for as long as it is reasonably needed for the purpose for which it was collected, including to meet legal, accounting, tax, safeguarding and reporting requirements.
Retention periods vary according to the type of information. In deciding how long to keep it, we consider the nature and sensitivity of the data, the reason it was collected, legal requirements and whether the purpose can be achieved in another way.
For example:
- enquiry and routine correspondence is normally kept for up to two years after the matter is closed, unless there is a reason to retain it for longer;
- donation, Gift Aid and financial records may be kept for up to seven years to meet tax, accounting and regulatory requirements;
- marketing details are kept until you unsubscribe or we determine that they are no longer required, after which we may retain a minimal suppression record; and
- cookie and analytics information is kept for the periods stated in our Cookie Policy.
10. How we protect your data
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against accidental or unlawful loss, alteration, disclosure or access. Access is limited to people and service providers who need it for legitimate purposes and who are subject to appropriate confidentiality obligations.
No internet transmission or storage system is completely secure, but we regularly review the measures used to protect the information under our control.
11. Children and young people
Some of our charitable and education work involves children and young people. Where we collect their personal data, we will explain how it will be used in an age-appropriate way and obtain consent from a parent, guardian, school or other responsible organisation where required.
Our general website is not intended to collect personal data directly from children without appropriate adult involvement. If you believe that a child has provided personal data to us inappropriately, please contact us.
12. Your data protection rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may have the right to:
- be informed about how we use your personal data;
- ask for access to the personal data we hold about you;
- ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- ask us to delete your personal data;
- ask us to restrict how we use your personal data;
- object to certain uses of your personal data, including direct marketing;
- receive certain personal data in a portable format; and
- withdraw consent at any time where we rely on consent.
These rights are not absolute and exemptions may apply. We may need to confirm your identity before dealing with a request. There is usually no charge, and we will normally respond within one month.
To exercise a right, please use our contact form or write to us at the address in section 1.
