Bear Again, Romania

Rehabilitating orphaned bear cubs and returning them to the wild.

Through our partnership with Bear Again in Romania, Space for the Wild supports one of Europe’s largest brown bear rehabilitation programmes. This is rescue with a clear goal: rewilding.

Why This Work Matters

Bear Again LogoAcross parts of Romania, brown bear cubs are increasingly orphaned due to habitat fragmentation, human conflict and environmental pressures.

Without intervention, many would not survive.

Bear Again provides specialist rehabilitation designed to prepare cubs for independent life in the forest.

The objective is not long-term captivity. It is return to the wild.

A Rewilding-First Approach

Bear Again is one of the few programmes in Europe that successfully releases rehabilitated brown bears back into their natural habitat.

Cubs are:

  • Rescued when orphaned or displaced
  • Raised with minimal human contact
  • Supported through structured behavioural development
  • Gradually prepared for release into protected forest

By reducing human dependency and strengthening natural behaviours, the programme gives bears the best possible chance of survival in the wild.

Our Role

When Bear Again faced a critical funding gap, Space for the Wild stepped in as a core supporter.

Our partnership helps:

  • Sustain rehabilitation facilities
  • Fund veterinary care and specialist expertise
  • Support long-term monitoring
  • Strengthen programme resilience

This collaboration reflects our commitment to international wildlife rescue and rewilding.

Why Rewilding Matters

Returning animals to the wild restores ecological balance.

A rehabilitated bear does not just survive. It becomes part of a functioning ecosystem.

Where habitat remains intact, rewilding protects both species and landscape.

This work complements our conservation efforts by ensuring wildlife can return to healthy environments.

Linked to Our Wider Mission

Rescue protects individuals.

Conservation restores habitats.

Rewilding connects the two.

Our support of Bear Again demonstrates how practical rescue and habitat protection must work together.
