Diego was found orphaned and alone as a cub. He was rescued and cared for in Sweden, but when that sanctuary closed, he once again needed a home.

With the support of thousands of people, we built Diego a woodland habitat at @jimmysfarmhq

His story became our catalyst for Space for the Wild.

EPISODE 12: Road to Happiness🪲

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes as the team races to get the moon bear reserve ready, so it’s important to take time in the quiet moments to stop
and appreciate what’s already happening there.

Resident filmmaker Isaac has spotted some exciting new arrivals in the reserve: whirligig beetles, incredible little creatures that are the fastest-swimming insects in the world!

They’re just one part of the wildlife already making use of the new space, alongside birds, dragonflies and plenty of other insects. It’s a wonderful sign that the reserve is becoming part of the wider @jimmysfarmhq

EPISODE 11: Road to Happiness🔨

There are plenty of jobs keeping the rangers busy as the moon bears’ arrival gets closer, but some of the more exciting ones are finally starting to take shape.

Ranger Adam is putting up swings that he and the team have been making in their spare time using recycled materials. They’ll give the bears somewhere to relax, sleep and play. And the design has already been tested by the brown bears.

Diego is a big fan of his swing, so the team is hoping the moon bears will enjoy theirs just as much! Seeing these final touches going into the reserve is making their imminent arrival feel more real.

together.

EPISODE 10: Road to Happiness🌿

There’s more to getting the moon bears’ new home ready than just the houses and terrain, the whole reserve needs to be alive.

The Estates team is continuing to work hard to get the island moats planted up, including transplanting water mint from some of the Wildlife Park’s existing reserves.

The water mint will provide the bears with something new to smell, explore and experience, while also creating habitat for native wildlife - including newts, which lay their eggs among its leaves. The aim is to create a living, thriving ecosystem right under the bears’ feet. With their arrival getting closer, every part of their new home needs to be ready.

EPISODE 9: The Road to Happiness 🌙

Everything is happening at once as our teams race to get the moon bears’ new home ready, and there’s really no time to waste now.⏰

Head Ranger Will is finishing the fencing and getting the electrics in - while more preparations and fundraising continue behind the scenes.

The bears could be here any day now, and we need to be ready. There’s still work to do, and we’re working against the clock to make sure their forever home is finished in time.

The countdown is on and we can’t wait to welcome the bears to their new home! 📆

This #InternationalDayOfCharity, @spaceforthewild COO Sarah reflects on Diego’s rescue story that inspires us every day to care for bears, protect the wild spaces they depend on, and give threatened animals a second chance - wherever they are in the world.

Today, we’re working to protect bears both here at @jimmysfarmhq and in the wild. And our work continues with #BearsBehindBars, as we work to bring five South Korean moon bears, rescued from the bear bile industry, to a happy new life.

EPISODE 7: The Road To Happiness 🌳

Our Moon Bear Islands Reserve is almost finished, and our rangers have been busy preparing for the bears’ arrival, including laying bark to create a soft, natural surface for bedding and enrichment. Beyond this, there will be so much for them to explore around the rest of their new home.

Made onsite at the farm using our @foxwoodchippers, the chippings will help create a more natural environment for bears who have spent their entire lives on concrete floors.

With every finishing touch, we’re getting closer to giving these bears the space, comfort and freedom they deserve!
